Trump's behavior during Friday's meeting with Zelensky did not surprise me at all.
The leader of the world's greatest power, a pompous boor, first scolds the president of Ukraine for not showing enough gratitude, and then throws him out of the Oval Office.
I do not want to analyze who started it, who provoked whom more and who bears greater blame for the fact that instead of watching the signing of the document, we had to participate with embarrassment in a display of arrogance and contempt performed by the American president and vice president.
Something else surprised me.
This is Zelensky's attitude. That he couldn't stand it and is returning to Europe with nothing.
Zelensky knew why he was coming to the States. He knew what he was signing. He was perfectly aware of the costs and revenues resulting from the agreement he was supposed to sign and he accepted it. Otherwise, he would not have come to America.
His bloody duty was to sign it. Instead, he preferred to be carried away by his honor and let himself be provoked. That is not how a statesman reacts. The leader of an attacked country fighting for survival must swallow his pride and take everything that is on the table, even if he is humiliated by his interlocutor. If I were Ukrainian, I would give Zelensky a red card today.
It is sad that since the last election, America is ready to provide aid to the world only for money, and it is led by an unpredictable buffoon. However, America is still the only force that can really stop Putin. Therefore, regardless of how stupid the sentences of its leader are, you have to grit your teeth, take what is given and wait to see what he achieves.
After the last meeting of the presidents, many voices were raised that Trump will now have an excuse to withdraw aid for Ukraine and attempts to stop the war. I believe that nothing of the sort will happen.
I have absolutely no doubt that Trump wants to end this war and he needs an agreement with Zelensky to do that. Zelensky will sooner or later return to the table and sign this agreement.
Zelensky will soon have a chance to tell Trump "No". In a moment he will receive a proposal to end this war in exchange for giving up some of his own territory, because only such an end to the war can Putin accept and only such an end to the war will Trump be able to negotiate. And then we will know the true effectiveness of the leader of the largest empire.
